Beyond Scale: A Purpose-Built Approach to Industrial Building Envelopes
Located in Hamilton’s Red Hill Industrial Park, this industrial facility, owned by Vicano, showcases the use of Norbec’s insulated metal panels (IMPs) for a large-scale building envelope.
General contractor Vicano partnered with Shear Metal Products to install over 74,500 sq. ft. of building envelope system panels. The building’s wall sections reached lengths of 270 ft. and heights over 40 ft., requiring careful coordination for handling and installation due to their size and the precision needed to ensure proper alignment.
The envelope consists of 4-inch Norex-L panels for primary walls and 5-inch Noroc-L panels in fire-rated areas. Combining these two panel types allowed the project to meet both thermal efficiency and fire protection requirements. Norbec’s NOREX panels provide continuous insulation and integrated air and vapor barrier performance, while NOROC’s mineral wool core delivers passive fire resistance. Each section of the building meets its specific performance needs efficiently. Both panels feature 26 ga embossed steel in Bright White SMP with Silkline striated profiles.
Design & Construction Impact
This project demonstrates how a high-performance building envelope system can deliver energy efficiency, fire protection, and durability in one solution. It helps reduce design complexity, supports code compliance, and streamlines the construction process for industrial facilities.
